How to Calculate Your Water Usage
Your meter reads in “hundreds of gallons.”
To get total gallons used for the month:
- Subtract the beginning reading from the ending reading.
- Multiply by 100 to convert “hundreds of gallons” to gallons.
Example
| Beginning Reading | 4,163 |
| Ending Reading | 4,327 |
| Difference (meter units) | 164 |
| Total Gallons Used | 164 × 100 = 16,400 gal |
Tip: A change of “1” on your meter ≈ 100 gallons.

Water & Wastewater Operations
Water Service Connections
New water service connections require all required applications, payments, etc. to be completed and turned in at City Hall no later than 4:00 p.m. for same-day connections. Otherwise, service will be connected on the following business day.
Applications can be found and printed from the front page of this website under the Document Center tab in the Forms Section.
Water Production
The primary activity of the Water Production Division is to produce and provide potable water as required by State regulations. Maintenance of equipment and operational activities must be maintained on a 24-hour basis to meet State requirements for potable water.
The City of Clute has an agreement with the Brazosport Water Authority to purchase 1,000,000 gallons of surface water daily. This surface water is supplemented by the City’s water wells.
Storage capacity for potable water includes one (1) 750,000-gallon elevated storage tank and one (1) 1,000,000-gallon ground storage tank. The City pumps approximately 1,200,000 gallons per day.
Water Distribution
The Water Distribution Division is responsible for maintaining an adequate water distribution system from the City’s supply to customers. The customer’s responsibility extends from the water meter to the home or business.
The City’s responsibility includes the installation and maintenance of all water lines, mains, valves, fire hydrants, taps, and loops within the City’s rights-of-way and easements. The department installs new water service mains and lines to provide for increased load capacity and responds to customer concerns regarding water service.
The current water distribution system includes approximately 3,193 meters.
Wastewater Collection
The Wastewater Collection Division is responsible for providing the transportation system from customer facilities to the Wastewater Treatment Plant. This system consists of sewer lines, manholes, and lift stations maintained by this department.
The customer’s responsibility extends from the home or business to the City’s collection system connection point.
On average, the department repairs approximately 1,250 feet of sewer lines annually.
